My most consistent challenge in learning this semester was that fact that it was completely different than high school. The transition was not too easy for me since my high school really did not do a good job when it came to preparing me for college. The most difficult class for me was MTH 141 even though I took calculus in high school and had no problem with it. We had these online mathematica projects which was extremely difficult for me considering I'm not good with technology and that fact that it was math made it that more frustrating. I love doing math with pen and paper, yet everything was online except the actual exams. I used the SI units a lot as well as my old notes from high school and the book I bought in order to try to learn and be successful. I also went to tutoring in Roosevelt once in a while and studied with some students in my class who taught me the material in another way which made it easier for me to understand.
I only used Evernote and the Evernote Web Clipper in class when we were told to do so. Whether that was clipping articles about a certain topic like poverty or even sharing and uploading notes and summaries from the books we have read throughout the semester. Like stated before I hate technology because I just do not understand it so I tried to use it as minimal as possible. I read other peoples posts and clippings on Evernote just because I was curious, but reading some of the articles informed me about certain poverty statistics as well as other topics in education. Evernote was also used to post the pictures and charts that were drawn during class so we could share our ideas with the rest of the class.
A strategy that I have developed/adopted this semester that will deepen my learning from high school is quite simple, but really helps in the long run. When I am assigned a book to read I will read it once for fun and not worry so much about writing a paper or summary on it. Once I read it for fun and get a general concept of the book with no stress I will then take my time and read it a second time, but this time paying more attention to what is really going on in the book and really analyzing it. This really benefitted me in the last book I had to read for my Literature class. Reading it for fun made me not stress and then a second time around I just read more carefully and discovered that every time you read a book you notice something different in it. This truly helped me in the long run even though reading it a couple of times is inconvenient and annoying, but I was able to get a decent grade on my paper this time around. When studying I also go in a completely closed room and actually study longer than 10 minutes. This has also benefitted me in so many ways because college is really not like high school. You can not just get away with studying for 10 minutes even if that and expect to do well on an exam or quiz.
